Jim pretty much decided he wanted to make wine when he was about 19 years old but he didn’t get serious about it until 2005, when he reached the ripe old age of 23! He has access to the wonderful Pommard clones up in his grandpa Jim Maresh’s vineyard at the top of the Dundee Hills and that’s a pretty good start. Those vines were planted by Jim and his wife Loie back in 1970 and the Maresh Vineyard is one of the five oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Heck, the youngest vines Jim works with are just as old as he is! But good fruit isn’t enough. How good of a winemaker is Jim, that’s the question. Well, rest assured that Jim has got “the touch.” He’s an absolute gambler when it comes to having the nerves of steel required to let fruit hang until they are just right. Then he likes to hold on to the juice in barrel as long as he can, usually around 18 months. After the wines are bottled and allowed to rest up on Worden Road for a bit, he goes out and starts selling them. And believe you me, Jim has the confidence of a poker player sitting on a royal flush. In a recent interview with Katherine Cole in the Oregonian, Jim said “I like to have as much fun as possible. I like to talk a fair amount of trash. I feel like the Dundee Hills make the best pinot noir that comes out of the New World and I don’t care about any other fruit outside of the Dundee Hills.” Luckily for Jim, his skill and pedigree both give him ample “street cred” when it comes to throwing down about Pinot Noir. Jim’s 2007 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir is an impressive early effort. In fact, I thought it was worth every penny of the original 34.00 price and we sold it with ease. It clocks in at a very elegant 13% alcohol and it has that nice transparent ruby color that I like to see in my Pinot Noirs. You will think Eyrie and Evesham Wood when you see the color of Jim’s wine. Beyond that, the floral scents of tart cranberries and wild strawberries float up out of the glass. Is there a bit of thyme or fresh-cut hay in there as well? The palate is light and nimble, with juicy acidity and lots of tart cherry and red raspberry fruit flavors. Those vines were planted by Jim and his wife Loie back in 1970 and the Maresh Vineyard is one of the five oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Heck, the youngest vines Jim works with are just as old as he is! But good fruit isn’t enough. How good of a winemaker is Jim, that’s the question. Well, rest assured that Jim has got “the touch.” He’s an absolute gambler when it comes to having the nerves of steel required to let fruit hang until they are just right. Then he likes to hold on to the juice in barrel as long as he can, usually around 18 months. After the wines are bottled and allowed to rest up on Worden Road for a bit, he goes out and starts selling them. And believe you me, Jim has the confidence of a poker player sitting on a royal flush. In a recent interview with Katherine Cole in the Oregonian, Jim said “I like to have as much fun as possible. I like to talk a fair amount of trash. I feel like the Dundee Hills make the best pinot noir that comes out of the New World and I don’t care about any other fruit outside of the Dundee Hills.” Luckily for Jim, his skill and pedigree both give him ample “street cred” when it comes to throwing down about Pinot Noir.

Jim’s 2007 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir is an impressive early effort. In fact, I thought it was worth every penny of the original 34.00 price and we sold it with ease. It clocks in at a very elegant 13% alcohol and it has that nice transparent ruby color that I like to see in my Pinot Noirs. You will think Eyrie and Evesham Wood when you see the color of Jim’s wine. Beyond that, the floral scents of tart cranberries and wild strawberries float up out of the glass. Is there a bit of thyme or fresh-cut hay in there as well? The palate is light and nimble, with juicy acidity and lots of tart cherry and red raspberry fruit flavors. After we can some peaches this afternoon I plan on saluting the end of summer with a bottle of this wine and a nicely grilled steelhead.

I first met Bruce Neyers when he came through my old store in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. He was there representing Kermit Lynch, for whom Bruce has been national sales director for many years.
